Homemade Sugar Cookies

There’s nothing quite like homemade cookies for the holidays! These fun little guys can be cut into whatever shape you want and decorated with icing and sprinkles to make them festive.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter, at room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 3/4 cups flour

Process

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar together in a stand mixer with the paddle attachment. Add the vanilla extract and the egg and mix until combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix the flour and baking powder.
  4. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the mixer, mixing until combined.
  5. If the dough feels warm, put it in the refrigerator for ten minutes or so to let it chill.
  6. Roll the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Using your favorite cookie cutters, cut the dough into fun shapes. Place the cut dough onto a sheet pan lined with a silicone baking mat (not an affiliate link).

Pro Tip: keep similar sizes and shapes on separate pans so they bake evenly.
  7. Bake for 7-10 minutes, until light brown. Cool for five minutes, then remove to a cooling rack.
  8. Once the cookies reach room temperature, frost them with your favorite buttercream or royal icing. Decorate with sprinkles and other fun elements to your liking.
  9. Share and enjoy!
