If you don’t like Dutch Apple Pie, your soul is empty. I don’t make the rules, I just report them. This pie recipe takes a little while to make, but it is absolutely worth the effort.
Ingredients
pie crust
- 1 1/4 cup flour
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 1 stick butter, divided into 8 tablespoons
- 1/4 cup ice water
apple Filling
- 6 apples. The best apples to use are Cortlands, Cosmic Crisps, or Granny Smiths. Macintosh apples would also work nicely.
- 2 tbsp. lemon juice
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup flour
- 2 tbsp. cinnamon
- 2 tsp. nutmeg
- 1 tsp. cloves (optional but adds a nice flavor)
crumble topping
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 6 tbsp. butter, divided into tablespoons
Process
make the pie crust
You can use a store-bought pie crust, but it’s not too difficult to make your own. Here’s how.
- In a food processor, pulse the flour and salt. Add the stick of butter and pulse again until the dough is crumbly. Drizzle in 1/4 cup of ice water.
- Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured surface.
- Shape the dough into a disc. Wrap it in plastic wrap and refrigerate it while you make the apple filling.
make the apple filling
- Peel, core, and slice the apples. You can use one of these fancy apple wrecker devices if you like, it makes the work a lot easier.
- Toss the apples, lemon juice, sugar, brown sugar, spices, and flour into a large bowl. Mix well with a wooden spoon, breaking the apples into chunks.
fill the pie
- Take the pie crust out of the fridge. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out into a 13-inch disc.
- Place the disc into a pie tin.
- Spoon the apple filling into the pie crust.
Add the crumble topping
- Whisk the flour, brown sugar, baking soda, and salt together in a big mixing bowl.
- Using your fingers, rub in the separated butter chunks. Rub the butter into the mixture until the mixture is crumbly.
- Press the crumble topping into the top of the apple mixture.
bake the pie
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
- Put the pie tin onto a baking sheet covered with aluminum foil. This will catch any liquid that bubbles out of the pie and keep it from ruining your oven.
- Bake the pie for 1 hour 10 minutes.
- Cool 4 hours.
- Serve! You can eat the pie by itself, or you can serve it with ice cream.
