Basic Fried Rice

Fried rice is a wonderful meal or side dish. This basic fried rice recipe is easy to spice up: add some sriracha, sweet chili sauce, or hoisin sauce to buff up the flavor. You can also add your favorite protein, such as chicken or pork!

Ingredients

  • 3 cups cooked rice — you can use Jasmine, white, or brown rice.
  • 1 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 1/4 chopped onion
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 1 cup peas and carrots (or whatever vegetables you like)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp. sesame oil
  • 3 tbsp. soy sauce
  • Green onions for garnish

Process

  1. In a skillet or a wok, heat up the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook, stirring frequently, for about three minutes.
  2. Add the peas and carrots. Cook for about two minutes.
  3. Turn the heat on the wok up to medium-high and add the rice. Cook for about three minutes, stirring frequently.
  4. Reduce the heat and push the rice to the edge of the pan, making a little hole for the egg. Crack the egg into the center of the pan and scramble it, then stir it into the pot.
  5. Add the soy sauce and sesame oil to the rice, then stir until evenly coated.
  6. Garnish with the green onions and serve!
